2nd International Symposium

Geosynthetics and Sustainability

Environmental, Civil and Hydraulic Engineering

We look back with great appreciation on a highly successful 2nd International Symposium on Geosynthetics and Sustainability, held on 18 March 2026 at TU Delft. We would like to thank all participants, both in person and online, for attending and for contributing to a valuable afternoon of knowledge sharing and discussion.

The symposium brought together professionals, researchers, and industry experts for an inspiring program focused on the role of geosynthetics in environmental, civil, and hydraulic engineering. A special highlight of the event was the launch of the IGS Geosynthetics Handbook.

The program featured an impressive line-up of distinguished speakers, including George Koerner, Wim Voskamp, Juergen Gruber, Kent von Maubeuge, Henning Ehrenberg, Marie-Therese Hortmann, and Justus Lagendijk. Their presentations offered valuable insights into design principles, life cycle assessment, flood protection, sustainable road applications, and innovative infrastructure projects in the Netherlands and beyond. The panel discussion and informal networking session that followed created a meaningful space for further exchange, discussion, and connection.

We would like to sincerely thank our valued partners and principal sponsors for their support and contribution to this event, including Naue Group, HUESKER Group, Solmax, Enviro Quality Control BV, and Tensar, a division of CMC. We also extend our gratitude to our collaborating organisations: the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), TU Delft, Deltares, EAGM – European Association of Geosynthetic Product Manufacturers, and KIVI – Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs. Their involvement and commitment helped make this symposium a valuable and internationally relevant gathering.

A special word of thanks also goes to the NGO-IGS Dutch team, the symposium coordinators, and everyone involved behind the scenes. Thanks to the dedication and commitment of Wim Voskamp, Rijk Gerritsen, Andries Steerenberg, Leo Kuljanski, Dick Janse, Sander Suk, Lieke van Vliet, and Jolanda van Zadelhoff, the event was made possible from start to finish.

We are proud to look back on an afternoon filled with knowledge sharing, international connection, and forward-looking discussions on sustainability in engineering.
